Bob began racing the local dirt tracks in 1966. By the late 1960's he became known as "Rusty" around NE Florida and Southeast Georgia because of the Rusty Acres Racing Farm on his Ford race cars. It was only fitting that he retained at least part of this name for his business.
In late 1973 when he was able to purchase Mechum's Auto Parts he parked his race car to devote his time to building a business. Bob maintained his connection to racers by helping local racers with parts and sponsoring race and car shows.
In 1990 a friend took Bob to Sport Car Club of America race in Daytona and Bob was hooked again. At this time, Rusty Acres was running fine and Bob needed a stress reliever. With many friends helping, Bob built a "Fox Body" Mustang and competed in SCCA in the American Sedan (AS) Class.
In 1997 Bob won the South Atlantic Road Racing Championship. In 200 Bob built his current 1999 Mustang powered by a 5.0L. In 2003 and 2004, Bob won South East Divisional National Championships. In 2012 he once again won the SARRC Championship.
These days, the car is only raced a couple times a year and other hobbies are given more time.
